Treaty
A formal agreement between nations, including tribal nations. In U.S. history, the federal government used treaties to establish borders, define rights and responsibilities, and acquire land from Native American tribes. The U.S. government frequently violated these treaties in order to exploit tribal resources and dismantle tribal land ownership.
